Capital Shopping Centres has plans
for three separate schemes that will significantly improve both the
retail offer and the public transport facilities at Eldon Square,
one of the country's leading shopping centres.
Work commenced in early 2005, with phased completions between 2006
and 2009. Some 1,000 jobs will be created on completion, with 2,000
workers being involved during the construction phases.
The schemes, which in total could cost £170m, will provide
a new, high-quality, fully enclosed bus station and a new mall at
the northern end of the scheme; a revitalised Old Eldon Square; and,
in the Southern Gateway scheme, a new Greenmarket, a new department
store and new, large shops.
The three schemes are:
ES West
This is the first stage of the revitalisation
of Old Eldon Square. Strada and Wagamama have opened at street level, and offer the opportunity of outdoor dining.
To complement this new activity in the square the city of Newcastle
is proposing to upgrade the landscaping and lighting of the square.
At the same time, seven new shops have been created on Blackettbridge.
ES North
The new Eldon Square bus station opened in March 2007 replacing the existing facility. It is light and airy, with a secure and spacious inside waiting area, which is an integral part of the shopping centre. Facilities include drinks and snacks, travel information and new toilets.
The latest phase will launch St. George's Way in Spring 2008. This new mall will enable better access to the Centre and incoporate a new Argos and 15 new stores.
ES South
Work has now started on the third and largest phase, Eldon Square South, comprising 410,000sq ft (38,089m2) of retail space.
The development involves the demolition of the existing shopping centre mall between Clayton Street and Newgate Street and rebuilt to provide a new Debenhams department store and two-level modern shops along a wider mall. Work will be completed in Spring 2010.
