Plans for Yellow and Blue Mall Published
Exciting new plans have been released by Capital Shopping Centres (CSC) to remodel MetroCentre’s Yellow Quadrant and introduce a modern leisure offer for all ages. The proposals will feature family dining, the latest cinema format, modern bowling, pool tables and children’s entertainment including a new external play area.
The proposals involve the re-organisation of space within MetroCentre and the new offer will be contained within the footprint of the existing building. As well as the new leisure facilities, modern retailing will take the place of the cinema in the Blue Quadrant.
There was considerable interest from shoppers during the consultation process held last autumn and feedback was supportive of the proposals which have been included in a planning application submitted to Gateshead Council today.
Richard Cable, Development Director of Capital Shopping Centres, commented:
“Over the last five years, we have injected over £100 million into the area through the investment we have made in keeping MetroCentre at the forefront of the UK shopping centre industry. This next phase will bring more jobs and ensure that MetroCentre continues to offer the best in modern shopping and leisure for local people and visitors to the North East.”
At the time of the remodelling, CSC proposes to undertake a comprehensive refurbishment of the Yellow Mall, including:
- The reconfiguration of the main entrance foyer
- The installation of new flooring in the malls
- The replacement of internal and external lighting
- The replacement and relocation of escalators and lifts
- Improved access to the yellow car park
A particular feature is the use of recycled zinc to clad the exterior, and the introduction of coloured glazing to create a dynamic and colourful feature, representing the entertainment nature of this part of MetroCentre.
It is anticipated that these proposals will create an additional 200 jobs once the development is completed, plus a further 380 jobs during construction
